Shigella is a Gram-negative, non motile, non-spore forming rod-shaped bacterium and is closely related Escherichia coli. This bacterium is the cause of human shigellosis, with clinical symptoms ranging from sever bloody diarrhoea, fever and stomach cramps.

 

Shigella are classified by four species: S. dyenteriae, S. flexneri, S.boydii and S. sonnei.

Each species is further classified to many serotypes, which are important for epidemiological studies.

 

The range of Shigella Antisera included 8 polyvalent and 41 monovalent sera. Polyvalent serum is a mixture of specific agglutinins which are used for the initial screening of the serotypes listed in the table below. Each monovalent antiserum contains individual type/group specific agglutinin.

Test principle

The test principle is based on the simple slide agglutination method. When a biochemically identified Shigella specimen is mixed one of the selected polyvalent or monovalent antisera, an antigen - antibody reaction may occur which can be identified macroscopically as an agglutination pattern.
